Application of SIO2 nanoparticles AS pretreatment alleviates the impact of drought on the physiological performance of Prunus Mahaleb (Rosaceae) Boletín de la Sociedad

We studied the physiological responses of Prunus mahaleb (Mahaleb) seedlings to drought stress when previously irrigated (or not) with different concentrations of SiO2 nanoparticles (SNPs). SNPs were applied at four concentrations (0, 10, 50 and 100 mg L-1) for 45 days, and then seedlings were subjected to three watering treatments including low (300 mL water every 3 d), moderate (150 mL water every 3 d) and severe drought stress (no irrigation) for 19 days. Results showed that gas exchange – photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate – were significantly less impacted by severe drought stress when seedlings were pretreated with SNPs at high concentrations. Beneficial effects of SNPs pretreatment were evident in the nutritional status of...

Bioconversion and saccharification of some lignocellulosic wastes by Aspergillus oryzae ITCC-4857.01 for fermentable sugar production Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Begum,Most. Ferdousi; Alimon,Abdul Razak.
The recent interest in bioconversion of agricultural and industrial wastes to chemical feedstock has led to extensive studies on cellulolytic enzymes produced by microorganisms. In the present study three lignocellulosic substrates viz. sugarcane bagasse, sawdust and water hyacinth were pre-treated with alkali and enzyme and their effect on bioconversion has been investigated. The ability of selected substrates for induction of cellulase enzyme by A. oryzae ITCC 4857.01 and for the potentiality of the induced enzyme to saccharify the substrates were also assessed. The maximum degree of conversion of substrate (0.415%) and improved specific substrate consumption (0.99 g substrate/g dry biomass) was exhibited in sugarcane bagasse after alkali treatment at 96...

Biosorption of hexavalent chromium using tamarind (Tamarindus indica) fruit shell-a comparative study Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Rao Popuri,Srinivasa; Jammala,Ajithapriya; Naga Suresh Reddy,Kachireddy Venkata; Abburi,Krishnaiah.
The adsorption of chromium (VI) ions from aqueous solutions has been investigated on crude tamarind fruit shell, HCl treated and Oxalic acid treated shells at room temperatures. The biosorbents are characterized by FT-IR, EDXRF and porosimetry. The biosorption experiments are conducted through batch system. The influence of different experimental parameters such as pH, effect of initial metal ion concentration and effect of dosage of adsorbent on biosorption are evaluated. The adsorption followed first order kinetics. The data are fitted well to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. A comparison is drawn on the extent of biosorption between untreated and treated forms of the tamarind shells. Due to their outstanding adsorption capacities, tamarind...

Criteria for the Extraction of Fish Oil CIGR Journal
BAKO, TANKO; VICTOR, UMOGBAI I; J, AWULU O.
The effect of pre-treatment of mackery (Scomber scombrus) on oil recovery and quality was investigated. Fish oil was extracted using the screw expeller press after heat pre-treatment of the fish sample. The effect of cooking temperatures and cooking times was evaluated. It was observed that the oil yield has a positive relationship with cooking temperature. The oil yield increased with increasing cooking temperature at all the cooking times investigated and also increased with increasing cooking time from 5-15 minutes and then decreased for 20 minutes cooking time at all the cooking temperatures investigated. The results revealed that a highest yield of 22.8 % was obtained when the fish was treated at 90 0C cooking temperature for 15 minutes. The lowest...

Impact of granular filtration on ultrafiltration membrane performance as pre-treatment to seawater desalination in presence of algal blooms ArchiMer
Sabiri, Nour-eddine; Sechet, Veronique; Jaouen, Pascal; Pontie, Maxime; Masse, Anthony; Plantier, Severine.
To mitigate fouling of the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane and improve permeate quality, we coupled granular filters (GF) with UF membrane as a pre-treatment for reconstituted seawater in the presence of algal bloom. Mono and bilayer granular filtrations were led at a mean velocity of 10 m h(-1) over a 7-hour period. Both GF gave the same algal cell retention rate (similar to 63%) after 7 hours of filtration. Turbidity reduction rate was 50% for the monolayer filter and 75% for the bilayer filter. Resulting organic matter removal rate was 10% for the monolayer filter and 35% for the bilayer filter. Dissolved organic carbon removal was low (20%) with the bilayer filter and non-existent with the monolayer filter. GF-coupled UF reduced humic acids in the...

Influence of Shape, Pre-treatment and Drying Air Temperatureon Quality of Dried Aonla CIGR Journal
Alam, Md. Shafiq; Singh, Amarjit; Chavan, Prasad.
Experiments were conducted to assess the effect of aonla shape, pre-treatment and drying air temperature on quality attributes of dried product. The aonla fruit was subjected to mechanical treatment to form three shapes i.e. spherical (whole pricked), cylindrical (15x35mm) and sheet (2 mm thickness) and were exposed to different pre-treatments i.e. untreated (UT), water blanching (WB), steam blanching (SB), blanching and sulphiting (B+S), sugar osmosis and salt osmosis prior to convective drying at temperature of 50, 60 and 70°C. The dried aonla (nearly 10% w.b) were analyzed for different quality attributes such as re-constitutional properties, vitamin C, colour and overall acceptability. The data indicated that re-constitutional properties, colour (L, a...
